Skin Specialists Offer Prevention, Treatment Options

For your skin care questions—whether about a suspicious mole, reconstructive surgery or achieving a glowing complexion—you can trust the professionals at the OSF Saint Anthony Specialty Clinic at Guilford Square.

Three Levels of Skin Interventions

Sarah Hagarty, MD, plastic and reconstructive surgeon, explains that there are three levels for patients to consider when contemplating skin interventions.

“Skin treatments, such as microdermabrasion, facials and skin creams are the least invasive procedures,” she explains. “The second level includes lasers, soft tissue fillers and injectibles, such as Botox and Restylane. Then surgical intervention encompasses face and eye lifts and body contouring, such as tummy tucks, liposuction and breast augmentation.”

Surgical intervention includes reconstruction procedures for patients facing body image changes, such as through breast, head or neck cancer; amputation; wounds; hernias and trauma.

Dermatology: Comprehensive Care

The Dermatology Department under Albert Hudson, MD, offers comprehensive skin care services, ranging from an assessment and biopsy of a suspicious mole to treatment for eczema, acne, rashes and psoriasis.

Shannon Taylor, PA, physician assistant, provides both clinical and cosmetic services, including minor surgeries and laser treatments. For example, she gives sclerotherapy injections for spider veins in the legs and uses intense pulsed light (IPL) laser to treat pigmented and red spots, vascular lesions and acne, and to remove facial hair.

For cosmetic services without a referral, you might want to consider a visit to the OSF licensed esthetician, Janetta Martina. She can provide facials and microdermabrasion treatment using a crystal-free system. The microdermabrasion equipment uses diamondtipped wands and a vacuum component, providing an effective fine line treatment with minimal risk and rapid recovery.

A microdermabrasion is only $25, and a one-hour facial that includes cleansing, toning, exfoliation, masque and face, neck and shoulder massage costs $55. The services are provided in a relaxing atmosphere with soft music and low lighting.

Depending on your skin’s needs, Janetta, Shannon and Dr. Hagarty can also recommend products to help protect and maintain skin health.

A visit to the Plastic Surgery or the Dermatology departments at the OSF Specialty Clinic can help you decide which procedures or products might benefit you most, whether you have worrisome lesions, want to lessen the appearance of lines, lighten discolorations or just want your skin to look better.
