Joint Commission Accreditation
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is fully accredited by The Joint Commission.

Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization established more than 50 years ago to set the standards by which healthcare quality is measured in America and around the world. Joint Commission is governed by a board that includes physicians, nurses, and consumers.

Joint Commission evaluates the quality and safety of care for nearly 16,000 healthcare organizations. To maintain and earn accreditation, organizations must have an extensive on-site review by a team of Joint Commission healthcare professionals, at least once every three years. The purpose of the review is to evaluate the organization's performance in areas that affect your care. Accreditation may then be awarded based on how well the organizations met Joint Commission standards.

Joint Commission accreditation involves evaluating a healthcare organization's performance in areas that most affect patient health and safety. These areas are defined in Joint Commission standards. By achieving accreditation, a healthcare organization makes a commitment to follow Joint Commission standards, which provide the framework for safe, quality care.

Steps in the accreditation process:
Step One

A healthcare organization applies for survey.

  • A team of Joint Commission surveyors conducts an onsite survey including:
  • Opening conference with the organization's leaders.
  • Tour facilities
  • Talk to staff and patients and observe care being provided.
  • Review patient charts, minutes, reports, logs, plans, policies and procedures.
  • Provide educational services to improve compliance with the standards.
  • Surveyors provide written report findings to organization leaders.

Step Two
Joint Commission's Central Office issues:

  • An official survey report
  • An accreditation decision
  • Joint Commission follows up with organizations to ensure that the organization addressed all requirements for improvement.
  • Joint Commission posts a performance report in Quality Check on the Joint Commission website.

An organization's accreditation is for three years. The only exception is for laboratories, which have a two-year accreditation. Accreditation is not automatically renewed. To become accredited again, an organization must reapply, participate in a survey, and demonstrate compliance with the standards.

OSF SAINT ANTHONY LABORATORY

RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS CAP ACCREDITATION

The Medical Laboratory at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Main Laboratory as well as satellite labortories have consistently been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

In the letter informing OSF Saint Anthony Administration of the accreditation, Ronald B. Lepoff, MD, chair, Commission on Laboratory Accreditation, stated, “OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Main Laboratory is one of a select group of laboratories that has been evaluated and found to be in compliance with the CAP accreditation standards—rigorous laboratory standards designed to help ensure quality patient care.  The CAP’s program is the most respected and recognized accreditation program in the world and has long been considered the ‘gold standard’ against which others are measured.  Your laboratory is to be commended for this major accomplishment.”

Begun in the early 1960s, the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.
