Personal Trainers & Classes: Helping You Reach Fitness Goals Safely
At one time, if you had a personal trainer, you were probably a professional athlete or Hollywood star.   But now we recognize that almost everyone can benefit from the expertise of a fitness professional.

If you have a sports injury, are preparing for a particular sport, want to get back in shape after having a baby, or just want to tone up, our personal trainers can help.”

Unique to the OSF program is that all personal trainers are degreed, certified, exercise physiologists who understand that everyone’s needs are different. Some people might want to improve muscle tone and balance; others to lose weight; and others to increase flexibility or endurance—but they may not be sure how to safely and effectively reach those goals.

Current Health Fitness members can arrange for a personal trainer. After a fitness level assessment and health history, the trainer can tailor a program that safely and realistically meets your needs and goals.

A special “New Member” evaluation, which includes four sessions with a personal trainer, is $99.  Sessions can also be divided into half-hour segments.

Under the “buddy” option, two people can benefit from the same personal trainer at the same time, with reduced rates.  Membership at the OSF Center for Health Fitness is required to arrange for a personal trainer.

Health Fitness membership packages include an initial evaluation, risk factor assessment, equipment demonstration, use of the facility amenities—and more.

For more information, call 815-395-4591.

To provide exercise options, the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Sports Medicine and Health Fitness offers a number of classes at the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Health, 5510 East State Street, Rockford.

Participants purchase a “punch card” that can be used to attend any 12 class sessions.  The card expires one year from the date of purchase.  The cost is $48 for OSF Health Fitness members and $60 for non-members. Please note that participants who are not OSF Health Fitness members must provide a completed physician’s authorization form in order to participate in any of the classes.

All classes are offered for six weeks. Punch cards are valid for one year from date of purchase.

Basic Training

Basic Training, which includes cardio work, agility training and plyometrics, is offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Participants at all fitness levels will be challenged while having fun.

Morning Combo Class

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Purchases Featherstone Clinic
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center has purchased the Featherstone Clinic, 698 Featherstone Road, Rockford.  OSF Saint Anthony began operating the clinic, known as the OSF Specialty Clinic – Guilford Square, on September 1, 2007.  The clinic specialty practices include otorhinolaryngology (ENT), allergy, dermatology, plastic surgery, audiology and immediate care.

“The acquisition of  the Featherstone Clinic expands our specialty provider network, and gives OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center the ability to serve patients requiring specialty care in a convenient location,” David Schertz, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center CEO, noted.  Currently the clinic accepts referrals from throughout the area and clinic staff work at all three Rockford hospitals.  This is expected to continue in order to best serve patients needing care.

The clinic welcomes new patients.

Hitting the Bull’s-Eye in Treating Tumors
Aiming radiation beams at a tumor accurately and precisely is vital.  Directing the highest dose of radiation at the tumor while avoiding healthy tissue surrounding it provides the best results with the fewest side effects.

Although the tumor’s location is mapped and the patient positioned before radiation therapy begins, the tumor can move.  Even slight variations, such as those caused by weight loss, breathing or other normal movements, can effect how precise the beam is.

To compensate for targeting a “moving” object, radiation oncologists have traditionally had to treat a margin of healthy tissue around the tumor.

But now, the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care has added Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) to its linear accelerator, the first facility in Rockford to offer this advanced technology for radiation therapy.

IGRT uses a CT scanner that provides high-resolution images.  The images pinpoint tumor sites so that the patient can be re-positioned, if necessary, before each treatment.

IGRT is being used for prostate, neck and head tumors.  Because of the location of the prostate, treatments can cause incontinence and impotence in some patients.  IGRT makes targeting the tumor even more precise, reducing the risk for these side effects.

In the future, the OSF radiation oncologists will also be collaborating with neurosurgeons in offering a specialized form of radiation therapy called stereotactic radiosurgery to patients with brain tumors.  This type of treatment provides very precise radiation delivered in a single session so that the target is irradiated, sparing normal tissue.

OSF SAINT ANTHONY RECEIVES MEDAL FOR ORGAN DONATION PROGRAM

For the third year in a row, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center has earned a U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Medal of Honor for Organ Donation.

To earn a Medal of Honor, hospitals must achieve at least a 75 percent donation rate, far higher than the current national average of 60 percent.

The Medal of Honor is part of the national organ donation initiative launched April 2001 by former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson.

In the letter informing OSF Saint Anthony of its Medal of Honor Award, Anthony M. D’Alessandro, MD, executive director of the University of Wisconsin Organ Procurement Organization, wrote, “It is a pleasure to collaborate with your hospital to provide the opportunity for organ donation as a part of your compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families.  Your ongoing commitment to implementing best practices surrounding organ donation and creating a supportive and caring environment for grieving families is evident.”

At OSF Saint Anthony, steps such as adding a question related to organ donation on admission forms and training the healthcare staff on compassionately approaching family members have helped increase donations.

In addition, OSF Saint Anthony formed an Organ Donation Committee in January 2007, which includes members from Neuro/Trauma ICU, pastoral care, the Critical Care Center, respiratory therapy, the Emergency Department and surgery.

OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care Offers Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Class
Women who have never been diagnosed with breast cancer but may have a moderate to high risk for developing the disease are invited to a Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Class to be held in the library at the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care. Classes are held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month. For more information or to register please call
815-227-2618.

In addition to increasing age, risk factors for developing breast cancer include having a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, especially if diagnosed at an early age, or carrying flawed versions of certain genes that have been linked to breast cancer. Women who have been diagnosed with precancerous breast changes, such as atypical hyperplasia, are also at increased risk. Recent studies show that the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women can be reduced with the use of certain anti-estrogen medication.

Women who are concerned about their chance of developing hereditary breast cancer can now use the “Pedigree Assessment Tool” (PAT) that Dr. Hoskins and his colleagues, Alice Zwaagstra, MS, RN, recently retired clinical nurse specialist for the OSF Saint Anthony cancer risk assessment program, and Michael Ranz, BS, MBA, developed for identifying women at high risk for hereditary breast cancer syndrome. Click here to access the PAT.

Information provided in the breast cancer risk reduction class is derived from the National Cancer Institute as well as information from the STAR study, including the benefits and risks of chemoprevention. Class size is limited, and registration is required. For registration and information, call 815-227-2618.

OSF Saint Anthony Is Tobacco Free!
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is committed to promoting quality
healthcare, which includes the prevention of disease, as well as its
treatment. With this commitment comes the responsibility of providing a
safe and healthy environment at all of our facilities. To establish and
maintain the safest possible environment in which to deliver that
quality care, OSF Saint Anthony became a tobacco-free organization and
campus as of November 16, 2006.

Smoking and the use of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars,
pipes, herbal tobacco and chewing tobacco are prohibited on OSF Northern
Region facilities, grounds and owned or leased vehicles. This includes
the grounds of OSF Saint Anthony; Saint Anthony College of Nursing; OSF
Medical Group physician locations; OSF Homecare; OSF Hospice; and
Lifeline Ambulance as well as personal vehicles parked on any OSF
Northern Region property. This is a natural extension of the July 4,
1990 policy making all areas of the medical center buildings tobacco
free.

This policy applies to all employees, physicians, medical staff,
volunteers, patients, students, contracted personnel, vendors, visitors
and tenants. This tobacco-free policy is a collaborative effort with
Rockford Health System and SwedishAmerican Health System. These
organizations also became tobacco-free in November. The policy was
established to minimize the adverse health effects of smoking for all
people associated with our organization; enhance employee productivity;
reduce healthcare costs and serve as a community role model. A task
force comprised of management and employees from OSF Northern Region,
smokers and non-smokers, was formed to gather input that would fine-tune the
policy for our organization.

Center For Cancer Care Offers New Radiation Therapy
The OSF Saint Anthony Center for Cancer Care has added Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) to its radiation oncology capabilities, the first facility in Rockford to offer this advanced technology for cancer treatment.

The image guidance system enables clinicians to obtain high-resolution images that pinpoint tumor sites so that patient positioning can be adjusted when necessary, often eliminating the need for “tattoos” or markings on the skin required for radiation treatments.

The exceptional level of accuracy of IGRT minimizes positioning uncertainty. Traditionally, radiation oncologists compensated for changes in the tumor location or the patient’s breathing patterns by treating a margin of healthy tissue around the tumor. The guidance system enables the physician to precisely locate the tumor to minimize the amount of healthy tissue that is exposed to radiation.

The OSF Center for Cancer Care uses the image guidance system manufactured by Varian Medical Systems, which is known for sophisticated, leading-edge technology in radiation treatment delivery. The on-board imaging system allows for adjustment to the slightest variance in the tumor’s position, even compensating for the patient’s breathing, weight change or tumor movement.
In addition to IGRT, OSF Saint Anthony offers sterotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy to a selected group of patients who previously would have been referred to Madison or the Chicago area for this type of treatment.

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a method of delivering high doses of ionizing radiation to small intracranial targets. This type of cancer treatment involves very precise radiation delivered in a single session so that the desired target is irradiated, sparing adjacent normal tissue. OSF Saint Anthony radiation oncologists will be collaborating with local neurosurgeons in the planning and delivery of this specialized form of radiation treatment.

OSF Personal Trainers Offer Individualized Attention
Although some people might associate personal trainers with professional athletes or the wealthy, the fact is that almost everyone can benefit from the expertise of a fitness professional who can design a program targeted to their individual needs.

Whether you have experienced an injury, are preparing for a particular sport, are pregnant or recently delivered a child—or want to stay as active and flexible as possible through life’s changes--you can have your personal fitness goals met safely and effectively at the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Health Fitness.

Members of the OSF Center have the opportunity to arrange an individual appointment with a personal trainer who can recommend the type and duration of an exercise regimen to safely and realistically attain a person’s goals.

The personal trainers at the OSF Center for Health are all degreed, certified, exercise physiologists who understand that everyone’s needs are different.  After an initial assessment, health history and skill testing, they can tailor a program that meets your needs and goals, whether short term or long term.

OSF personal trainers can help you lose weight, improve your balance and muscle tone, increase your flexibility and energy level, gain strength and endurance and improve your self image in a safe and effective program.

Fees for one-hour sessions with a certified exercise physiologist for OSF Health Fitness members are $45, with rates per hour decreasing for four, eight, 12 and 20 sessions purchased at the same time.  A special New Member evaluation, which includes four sessions with a personal trainer, is $99.  Sessions can be divided into half-hour segments if preferred.

The personal trainers at OSF also offer a “buddy” option in which two people can benefit from the same personal trainer at the same time.  Fees for a buddy program begin at $60 per hour; less as more sessions are purchased.
