Surgery Center and 3 South
The Surgery Center is located on the second floor of the OSF Saint Anthony Ambulatory Care Center. It is home to all outpatient surgery and morning surgical admissions. The Center has 14 private beds and a bay area for five additional beds. Two procedure rooms provide an area for local surgeries not requiring an anesthesiologist, such as for superficial skin lesions or some biopsies.

The Surgery Center provides direct access to 13 operating rooms and to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), making the patient flow efficient. In 2002, three new surgical suites were opened. Two are dedicated to orthopedic procedures and the third for general surgeries. With a total of 14 surgical suites, OSF Saint Anthony has more surgical suites than any other hospital in the region. During 2004, more than 9,150 surgeries took place at OSF Saint Anthony.

As in all areas throughout the medical center, privacy is a concern. A special discharge area has been designed so that patients can discreetly leave the Center without going through the hospital.

Each room in the Surgery Center has been designed for the patient’s comfort and recovery. Soft, relaxing music has been piped in, and dimmers are installed on the lights. Both features can be controlled by the patient and family.

Separate inpatient and outpatient surgical waiting rooms have been constructed, with private consultation areas for the family to speak with the surgeon following surgery. With its friendly, dedicated, skilled staff as well as a warm, reassuring atmosphere, the Surgery Center is a great place to work at OSF Saint Anthony.

The Surgery Department at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center provides a challenging dynamic workplace that promotes job satisfaction and personal growth. Our team consists of the surgeon, anesthesiologist, registered nurse, surgical technologist and support aides. Our goal is to provide quality and compassionate care to patients and their families every single day.

Because of our Level I Trauma Center, Surgery Department staffers are on the go 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The fast-paced environment requires a multi-disciplinary team approach each time a patient is brought into the operating room.

3 East – Post Surgical Unit
3 East is a 32-bed adult post-surgical unit. The nurses on this unit care for a wide variety of surgical patients including multiple trauma post ICU; urology; gynecology; abdominal; thoracic; eye; and general surgery.

We are committed to your education. Basic EKG courses are provided for RNs and LPNs because the unit has telemetry capability. New nurses work with a preceptor to help speed the learning process and increase their comfort level. We also have monthly staff meetings to discuss new procedures, equipment, services and review processes that could be improved.

3 East has a unit practice committee with another medical—surgical unit as part of our Professional Practice Council. The Council helps provide guidelines for making clinical decisions regarding how patient care. Key issues for all staff in 3 East are making sure our patient’s are satisfied with their care and their pain is properly managed.
